Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and throughout the world on November 1 and 2.

It’s a celebration of life honoring friends and family who have passed away. Colorful altars are created and feature favorite foods, drinks and personal mementos of the deceased.

The decorated altars also include hand-cut paper marigolds or fresh marigolds which represent the fragility of life.

This year, with the help of the City of San Antonio's Solid Waste Management Department and District 5, the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center received donated compost and was able to help the community grow marigolds for their altars.
