This webinar will showcase two unique studies being conducted by Postgraduate students at The Matilda centre within the Crime Research Portfolio.

The first half of the webinar focuses on work conducted by Siobhan Lawler, examining whether rehabilitation is a theme in sentencing young people for serious violent crime involving alcohol and other drugs. The vast majority of young people in custody have alcohol and other drug problems, most are intoxicated at the time of their offence and report committing crime to obtain alcohol and other drugs. Despite a strong link between drug use and violent offending, there is a lack of information about judges’ behaviour in sentencing young adult violent offenders who use drugs.

The second half of the webinar showcases the pilot of The Substance Use Treatment Programme in the NSW secure forensic hospital being led by Daniel McFadden. This programme has been shown to be efficacious in forensic secure settings in the United Kingdom. It comprises motivational interviewing techniques within a CBT framework and is particularly important given the rate of substance use disorder among mentally ill offenders is disproportionately high when compared with that of the prison and general population.
