The Caspian Sea Monster was the nickname given by Western intelligence to the KM Ekranoplan, a massive experimental vehicle developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. It earned its fearsome name due to its enormous size and unusual appearance, resembling a giant aircraft skimming just above the surface of the sea. Using ground-effect technology, the vehicle could fly at very low altitudes, gaining lift from the air cushion between its wings and the water, allowing it to travel at high speeds while carrying heavy loads.

First spotted by U.S. spy satellites in the 1960s over the Caspian Sea, the mysterious craft caused widespread confusion and concern. Analysts were unsure whether it was an aircraft, a ship, or an entirely new class of military weapon. Designed for strategic military purposes, the Caspian Sea Monster had the potential to transport troops, vehicles, and weapons while remaining difficult to detect by conventional radar systems.

Despite its technological innovation, the project faced serious challenges, including high development costs, limited maneuverability in rough weather, and operational risks. After a major accident in 1980, the program was eventually discontinued.
