The Raspberry Pi 5 has been nice, but I haven't been using it as much as my main computers or even an Apple TV. Why?! What's the problem? Well, part of the problem is all those niceties that are included with other operating systems.

Pretty emoji were not standard with my Raspberry Pi. 🙀

Fortunately, the problem is easily solved. The “Noto Color Emoji” font could be installed to remedy the problem. But through this experience, I learned new things.

First, I improved my understanding of the word “Noto”. 🤭

But more importantly, I learned a new perspective in what makes a computer a good computer. The Raspberry Pi 5 is often compared to desktop computers, but mainly in matters of cost-per-performance. It's not just raw horsepower that's important. It's usability.

The Raspberry Pi is a “maker” computer. While it can be customized to have a more traditional desktop feeling, and it can handle a lot of common computing tasks, it's more geared towards tinkering and building things.

If the Raspberry Pi is supposed to be “The everything computer” and
a computer for everybody, it's not just about hardware. The software needs to catch up too. Something as simple as missing emoji could discourage new users.
