If you're wondering: Which mirrorless camera should I buy for wildlife photography - the Canon R6 or the Canon R7 - this video is for you! Rather than comparing their similarities, I look at four key aspects where the Canon R6 and R7 differ a lot, namely: 1) Price, 2) the Sensor, 3) Low Light capabilities and 4) Frame Rates.

First of all, at $2500 US, the Canon R6 is substantially more expensive than the Canon R7, which retails for approximately $1500 US. So, if you don't have a massive budget, you might be forced into considering the Canon R7 over the R6, especially if you're saving up for a lens as well.

Why the big difference in price?

Well, the first thing is the difference in sensor type and size. The Canon R6 has a 20.1 mega pixel full frame sensor that produces incredibly high quality photos and is great for anyone who loves photographing animals in the environment as well as landscape and star scape photos. I do wish it was a little bit larger, offering more room for cropping, but all in all, the quality of photos this sensor produces is amazing.

The Canon R7 has a 32.5 mega pixel APS-C sensor, which magnifies your lens's focal length by 1.6. That means a 100-400mm lens is effectively a 160-640mm lens and a 150-600mm lens a 240-960mm lens. This is great for people who photograph animals in parks and reserves where you can't get very close to them, or birds that are not only far away, but also small. The Canon R7's larger sensor also leaves more room for cropping, but since it's a crop sensor, it won't perform as good in low light or at night as that of the Canon R6. Thus, the Canon R7 is not idea for landscape photography, night time photography or low light photography.

When it comes to ISO, the Canon R6 has a much larger range than the Canon R7. The Canon R6's ISO range is 100-102400, whereas the Canon R7's is 100-32000. You'll most likely start seeing grain at lower ISO levels on the Canon R7 than you would on the Canon R6. In other words, if you photograph a lot of animals in low light, like I do, the Canon R6 is the better option.

One of the most important things to consider, is the cameras' frame rates. The Canon R6 can photograph at 12 frames per second mechanically and 20 frames per second electronically, and for both the buffer is 240 frames in RAW, which is very good! The Canon R7 on the other hand can photograph at 15 frames per second mechanically and 30 frames per second electronically, but don't be fooled! This faster frame rate is not worth much when you look at the buffer. You can only shoot RAW files at 15 frames per second for for 51 shots and RAW files at 30 frames per second for 42 shots. That means you have to get your timing spot on, otherwise you've missed the shot.

In conclusion, the Canon R6 is great for people who values quality over longer focal lengths and the ability to crop, and who takes a lot of wider shots in low light. The Canon R7 is excellent for people who photograph smaller subjects (like birds) far away from them in good light, but if you expect to photograph a lot of action in RAW, the Canon R7 might just let you down.
