This is the third episode in the second season of the Rebel Without a Kitchen show. This episode finds Matt and his intrepid crew in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia for a festival.


In 2014 Chef Matt Basile had a vision for a show that focused on the growing street food movement and Rebel Without a Kitchen became that show. The show was originally featured on the Cooking Channel and after several successful seasons Matt decided to take his culinary craft in a slightly different direction. With his intrepid team by his side Matt traveled to a wide variety of locations cooking and tasting his way across the nation.

They set the bar so high in season 1 of the show that it was a bit of a challenge coming up with new ideas to top what had already been accomplished. After some serious brain storming they came up with a fantastic idea, they would take this show on the road. This is how they came to be in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

We hear Matt talking about the trip throughout this video and one recurring theme emerges time and time again. Matt had nothing but the absolute nicest things to say about all the people he met in Nova Scotia. He even went on to say that many of the people he met there were now his good friends.

Upon arriving to the location Matt would be cooking at he finds out that he will not just be cooking alongside other food truck owners like himself. He will be essentially competing against executive chefs, restaurateurs, and other individuals world renowned for their cuisine. This rattles his cage a bit as we can see in the video. These days Matt has no problem at all cooking in public, facing off against other chefs, and just generally holding his own in fine style. However, at the time this was filmed Matt was only 27, meaning he was just about half of everyone else's age that he was cooking with. While he was experienced to be sure many of these trips were still a whole new ball of wax to him. Add in the extra pressure of being followed around by a camera and you can certainly understand how he might have felt a bit more stressed out than usual.

Matt relays to us that he learned a lot in this particular episode telling us a tale of oyster shucking. They showed up late to prep the kitchen for the next day. They had been filming all day which caused quite a bit of a delay in their arrival. Upon arriving to the kitchen Matt said he could feel a strange energy in the air, claiming that the whole kitchen was full of chefs but it was completely silent. Something felt amiss without a question. After assessing the situation Matt, the entire kitchen crew, the camera crew, the production crew, and even Ky realized that they would all have to pitch in or the crabs would never be shucked in time. That is just what they did finally wrapping up the task at 5AM that morning.

This was clearly one of Matt's more trying, and also rewarding adventures, and one he will not be forgetting any time soon. Although the weather in Nova Scotia does seem to be a bit unforgiving it still looks like a beautiful and interesting place to visit.
