A musical retelling by string quartet of C.S. Lewis's third and final novel in the Space Trilogy.

Movement one documents the misanthropy of the National Institute of Co-Ordinated Experiments (N.I.C.E.) and the bureaucratic intrigue of the organization. Once NICE is introduced, we move to the Deputy Director John Wither in an almost G major, the man possessed by Macrobes (demons), is only able to roughly impersonate how a normal human might act. Then to the Saracen's guillotined head, the literal figurehead of NICE, being kept alive only via I.V. and test tubes. This leads to Miss Hardcastle's Brute Squad, NICE Institutional Police dominating the English Town of Edgestow. At the zenith of their pursuits, the wizard Merlin interjects from the grave and is awakened to put a pause to the proceedings. After Merlin's appearance, NICE resumes its inexorable rampage to the conclusion of the movement. Listen for an appearance of the Un-man (Satan) theme from the Perelandra Quartet, revealing the source of NICE's power.
