After Fidel Castro and Ernesto “Che” Guevara successfully carried out the Cuban Revolution in 1961, the United States severed its diplomatic ties with the island country and imposed a trade embargo the following year.

The turning point came on December 17, 2014, when Cuban leader Raul Castro and U.S. President Barack Obama decided to start the process of restoring diplomatic ties. In the first half of 2015, as both sides conducted four rounds of negotiations at senior diplomatic level, civil exchanges were frequent in the fields of tourism, sports, music, technology, finance and business. On July 1st,2015, the two countries confirmed the restoration of their diplomatic ties and prepared to reopen embassies in each other’s capital on July 20. China welcomed the U.S.-Cuban decision, with its Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying saying that "the restoration of diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Cuba is an important step on the path toward the normalization of relations.”
