Shruti and Smriti: Sacred Divisions in Sanatana Dharma
In Sanatana Dharma, sacred scriptures is divided into two primary categories: Shruti and Smriti. "Shruti," which means "what is heard" in Sanskrit, comprises texts that have been directly revealed by the divine, making them authoritative and unquestionable. The core of Shruti consists of the four Vedas: Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda, each serving distinct purposes within our Universe. These Vedic texts encompass hymns, rituals, and philosophical teachings, with additional classifications as Aranyakas, Brahmanas, and Upanishads, delving into moral science, hymn explanations, and profound knowledge passed from Gurus to disciples.
On the other hand, "Smriti," which translates to "what is remembered," includes texts written by ancient seers and sages, reflecting human intellectual contributions to Hindu wisdom. Smriti can be categorized into four groups: Vedangas, which comprehensively explore Vedic text meanings; Upavedas, applying knowledge to various fields like arts and science; Upangas, providing foundational life principles; and Darsanas, offering six philosophical viewpoints.
The key distinction lies in the divine origin and higher authority of Shruti texts, while Smriti texts are considered human-authored and less authoritative. Both Shruti and Smriti play vital roles in preserving and transmitting spiritual, scientific, material, and cultural knowledge through generations.
