Φοινικόδασος Βάι -Vai palmgrove, Crete in 4K ( Ultra HD )

Το Βάι βρίσκεται 94 χλμ ανατολικά του Αγίου Νικολάου και 24 χλμ ανατολικά της Σητείας, στις ανατολικές ακτές της Κρήτης. Είναι η πιο διάσημη παραλία της ανατολικής Κρήτης, καθώς κύριο χαρακτηριστικό του είναι το μεγάλο φοινικόδασος με δέντρα του Θεόφραστου (Phoenix theophrastiι). Το όνομα του μάλιστα προέρχεται από το βάι που είναι ο φοίνικας. Η αποικία είναι η μεγαλύτερη στην Ευρώπη με 5000 περίπου δέντρα, ενώ μικρότερες αποικίες υπάρχουν σε άλλα μέρη της Κρήτης και στη νοτιοδυτική Τουρκία. Σύμφωνα με το θρύλο, οι φοίνικες φύτρωσαν από τα κουκούτσια χουρμάδων που πέταξαν πειρατές από την Αφρική. Ωστόσο, το φοινικόδασος έχει ηλικία 2000 χρόνων, γεγονός που δεν μπορεί να επιβεβαιώσει αυτή την εικασία. Πλέον η θεωρία έχει αντικαταστήσει τα πειρατικά πλοία με φοινικικά, 20 αιώνες πριν.Το παραδεισένιο φοινικόδασος είναι φυτρωμένο σε μια μεγάλη κοιλάδα και ποτίζεται από τα νερά που την διαρρέουν. Στην έξοδο του φοινικόδασους στη θάλασσα, σχηματίζεται μια εξωτική αμμουδερή παραλία με ανοιχτή άμμο, που με το φόντο των φοινικόδεντρων, θυμίζει παραλίες από Αφρικανικά τοπία και την Καραϊβική. Η περιοχή ανήκει στην περιουσία της Μονής Τοπλού.

Vai is located 94km east of Agios Nikolaos and 24km east of Sitia, on the eastern coast of Crete. It is the most famous beach in eastern Crete, as its main feature is the large palm grove with the Cretan Date Palm (Phoenix theophrasti). Its name derives from the word vai, meaning palm in Greek. The palm grove is the largest in Europe with approximately 5000 trees, while there are smaller colonies in other parts of Crete and in Southwest Turkey. According to the legend, the trees have grown from discarded date stones thrown into the sea by Saracen pirates. However, the palm grove is 2000 years old and the pirates are more recent. Thus this hypothesis has changed and the Saracens have been replaced with Phoenicians, that governed the Mediterranean Sea 20 centuries ago.The heavenly palm grove is planted in a wide valley watered by the local river for centuries. An exotic sandy beach with whitish sand is formed near the shore, backed by the edenic palm forest, reminding of African and Caribbean seascapes. The entire region is owned by the Toplou Monastery, which is the largest landowner in eastern Crete.
