Historical Overview

Inaugurated on May 25, 1869, with Mozart’s Don Giovanni, the opera house was originally named the Vienna Court Opera (Wiener Hofoper). The building, designed in the Renaissance Revival style by architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, was the first major structure on Vienna’s Ringstrasse. Following the establishment of the First Austrian Republic in 1921, it adopted its current name, Vienna State Opera. 

During World War II, the opera house suffered significant damage from bombing raids in 1945, leading to extensive reconstruction efforts. It triumphantly reopened on November 5, 1955, with a performance of Beethoven’s Fidelio.

The Vienna State Opera is celebrated for its opulent architecture and interior design. Notable features include the grand staircase, the Schwind Foyer adorned with frescoes by Moritz von Schwind, and the main auditorium, which seats 1,709 guests with an additional 567 standing places.

The opera house boasts a diverse repertoire, staging approximately 50 to 60 different operas and ten ballet productions annually, totaling over 350 performances each season. This extensive programming is unparalleled globally. 

The Vienna State Opera has been under the leadership of distinguished directors and conductors, including Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, and Herbert von Karajan. Since 2020, Philippe Jordan has served as the music director.
