The Word Association Test (WAT) is one of the core psychological assessments conducted during the SSB Interview, especially vital for Service Entry candidates. This test aims to evaluate a candidate’s subconscious personality traits through their spontaneous responses to stimulus words. For serving personnel aiming for commission, this test becomes a significant parameter in assessing Officer Like Qualities (OLQs)—including effective intelligence, emotional maturity, responsibility, leadership, and decision-making skills.

In the WAT, 60 words are displayed one after the other, each for 15 seconds. The candidate must write the first thought or sentence that comes to mind. This seemingly simple task is a powerful tool used by psychologists to understand your attitude, perception, imagination, and value system. Unlike academic or technical tests, the WAT requires deep self-awareness, clarity of thought, and mental conditioning.
