In the summer of 1944, German tank crews learned a shocking truth — not every Sherman was an easy kill. On July 27th, tank ace Ernst Barkmann, credited with 53 victories, fired at what he thought was another ordinary M4. But instead of the usual fireball, his Panther’s shell sparked and ricocheted off an unfamiliar 38-ton beast.

This was the M4A3E2 “Jumbo”, a heavily armored American assault tank that the Germans hadn’t even known existed. Designed in secrecy and produced in only 254 units, the Jumbo shattered every expectation the Wehrmacht had about U.S. armor. Some of these tanks survived 30 to 60 direct hits, turning the myth of the “weak Sherman” into a deadly illusion.
