For over a decade of DSP tuning I’ve run into the same frustrating problem, no matter the method or microphone: inconsistency. This video takes a hard look at the reliability, consistency, and repeatability of popular measurement microphones over time.

This isn’t about which mic “sounds” best or has the lowest distortion. It’s about whether you can trust a mic to give you consistent results from one day to the next, or even after months of use. I test:

Earthworks M23 (3.5 years old with 3.5 years of use)

Earthworks M23R (Brand new)

Dayton Audio Omnimic v2 (sitting for a few years, but never opened until this test)

Dayton Audio UMM6 (7 years old, used for approximately 9-12 months until i noticed inconsistencies)

MiniDSP UMIK-1 (Cross Spectrum Labs calibrated) (4.5 or so years old, used for about 9 months before i noticed inconsistencies)

Using correlated pink noise through my own car audio system, each mic was measured at the same volume, back-to-back, on two different days with different weather conditions. The results are shown in REW, smoothed to 1/6th for clarity, with windows both stacked and spread out for easy comparison.

The goal here is simple: to demonstrate how these microphones hold up over time and in real-world use, and whether day-to-day variation is small enough to trust your tuning decisions.
