Natural farming can be defined as chemical-free farming that uses only natural inputs. Well-grounded in agro-ecology, it is a diversified farming system that integrates crops, trees and livestock, facilitating optimal use of functional biodiversity.

Natural farming provides a strong basis for increasing farmers' income while providing many other benefits, such as restoration of soil fertility and environmental health, and mitigation or minimization of greenhouse gas emissions. Natural farming is based on natural or ecological processes that exist on or around farms.

Internationally, natural farming is considered a form of regenerative farming – a key strategy for saving the planet. It has the potential to manage land practices and sequester carbon from the atmosphere in soils and plants, where it is actually useful rather than harmful.

There are many indigenous forms of natural farming in India, the most popular of which is practiced in Andhra Pradesh. This practice, in other forms, has also been adopted in other states, especially those in South India. It is promoted under the centrally sponsored scheme Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) as Indian Natural Farming System (BPKP). BPKP aims to promote traditional indigenous practices – based largely on on-farm biomass recycling, with emphasis on mulching and use of cow dung and urine mixture preparation.

No synthetic chemical inputs are used in it. Currently, BPKP is adopted by eight states in the country including Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh
