The Arab Teacher Integration in Jewish Schools program (ATI) is a joint initiative with the Ministry of Education, whose goal is to place 500 Arab Israeli teachers in Jewish schools to teach core subjects (English, math, and science). The program addresses the realities of Israeli’s separate school streams, in which Jewish pupils/students (and perhaps teaching staff) may never have a substantive and sustained encounter with an Arab citizen or learn anything about the Arab culture. The program leverages the needs of senior pedagogical professionals in schools, and in the Jewish educational system (key people), to recruit and place qualified core subject teachers in classrooms and delivers a solution to the lack of readily available teachers from the Jewish sector by providing highly qualified, currently unemployed/underemployed Arab teachers (predominately women) for placement. The placement of an Arab citizen to a teaching role in which they are an authority figure, a role model and an educator creates an exceptional opportunity to convey the values of shared citizenship and respect for diversity and establishes a foundation for improving inter-group relations within Israeli society.
