More voices are coming out to agitate for strategic state facilities to be placed in the hands of private businesses if South Africa is to get out of the current paralysis. This week Efficient Group chief economist Dawie Roodt said Eskom is financially and operationally impossible to salvage, and there's no other way to save the state entity but to privatise it.

Now similar views were shared recently by Gareth Ackerman, who chairs one of South Africa's leading food retailers. Speaking at the annual summit of the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa, Ackerman urged the government to allow private companies to manage critical infrastructure including ports and freight-rail, as a strike staggers the nation's state-owned operations.
