For the first time in history, the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras has released the most detailed 3D high-resolution images of the human fetal brain. This revolutionary research, known as DHARANI (Earth in Sanskrit), features 5,132 digitally imaged brain sections at cell resolution, making it the largest publicly accessible digital dataset of its kind!

Making this even more remarkable is the fact that it was done at less than 1/10th of the cost compared to similar projects in Western countries. The pioneering work, led by Prof. Mohanasankar Sivaprakasam and supported by #IITMadras, global researchers, and key partners like Mediscan Systems, Saveetha Medical College, and NVIDIA, will accelerate advancements in neuroscience, fetal medicine, and developmental disorder treatment.

This global resource, developed during the COVID pandemic, marks India’s entry into the elite league of brain mapping science. With over 500 brain regions identified, DHARANI is set to shape the future of brain research for decades.
