When you walk into a workplace, it’s natural to look to your boss for direction. They hold the title, they make the calls, and they set the tone for the team. But here’s the danger…titles don’t guarantee competence, and authority doesn’t equal morality. Following blindly can take you places you never intended to go.

Imagine a ship at sea. The captain stands at the helm, but if he can’t read the stars or the maps, the crew is at risk of being steered into shallow waters. And if that same captain knows how to navigate but doesn’t care about honesty or the safety of his crew, he might steer them toward treasure at the cost of their lives. Either way, a sailor who never questions the course shares in the wreckage when it comes.

Workplaces are no different. A boss who lacks skill can make decisions that waste time, money, and reputations. A boss without a moral compass can drag a whole team into unethical or even illegal behavior. And when that happens, it’s not enough to say, “I was just following orders.
