Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev (Сергей Сергеевич Прокофьев/Sergey Sergeyevich Prokofiev) (1891-1953) was a Russian/Soviet composer, pianist, and conductor. His works range from piano sonatas to operas, and he is regarded as one of the most important composers of the 20th century.

The first published work of Prokofiev, it is a revision of a previous student sonata. It is a very broad and virtuosic piece, that could be said to represent the confidence of the young composer who just made his debut. The premiere was by the composer in the summer of 1910 in Moscow.
