Picture stepping into a bright musical circus where every creature gets its own dazzling spotlight. That’s “The Carnival of the Animals,” the playful suite French composer Camille Saint-Saëns dreamed up in 1886 just to amuse his friends. As you listen, you’ll hear a mighty lion roaring through grand cellos, busy chickens clucking on bouncy pianos, and a lumbering elephant dancing on a deep, funny double-bass. Kangaroos spring in quick leaps, while a graceful swan glides on shimmering harp and clarinet, and rattling xylophones make you giggle at a clacking skeleton. Finally, all the animals parade together, waving goodbye in a sparkling, joyful finale.

Immagina di entrare in un grande circo musicale dove ogni animale ha il suo momento sotto i riflettori. È «Il Carnevale degli Animali», la fantasia che il compositore francese Camille Saint-Saëns scrisse nel 1886 per divertire i suoi amici. Ascoltando, sentirai un leone che ruggisce con violoncelli maestosi, galline che chiocciano sui pianoforti saltellanti e un elefante che danza con il contrabbasso grosso e buffo. Ci sono persino canguri che fanno balzi veloci, un cigno elegante che scivola sull’arpa e sul clarinetto, e xilofoni che fanno sorridere pensando a uno scheletro tintinnante.
