Taormina Giardini train station | What to do in Sicily 🇬🇧 English Version
Taormina Giardini train station, was designed as part of a railway construction program undertaken by the Vittorio Emanuele Society in Sicily.
The goal of the program was to connect the northernmost point of Sicily and the port of Messina to the productive eastern coastal areas of the Jonian Sea via railway.
The station was built in the space between two tunnels in the area below the town of Taormina, next to the State Road 114, about one kilometer before the village of Giardini, in the hamlet of Villagonia.

It was originally named after the nearest village, Giardini, but soon the name Taormina was added as the station was located in its municipality.
The Taormina Giardini station was inaugurated on December 12, 1866, along with the opening of the Messina-Giardini railway line, which was later connected to the Catania station on January 3, 1867.
Due to financial difficulties faced by the Vittorio Emanuele Society in the mid-1870s, the management of the station was temporarily transferred to the Italian Company for Southern Railways until 1885, when it was taken over by the Sicily Railway Company as part of the Sicilian Network.
In 1905, it was finally purchased along with the line by the newly formed State Railways.

In the mid-1920s, the State Railways began a program to upgrade railway infrastructure, and the Taormina station was entirely rebuilt as part of this program.
The project was entrusted to the architect Roberto Narducci. The expansion works, which included the doubling of the station, also required the expropriation of the Castle of Villagonia, a residence of the noble San Martino family, which was located on the sea shore in the area partly used for the new railway station. Along with the castle, the chapel of the Madonna di Porto Salvo was also demolished.
The building was completed between 1926 and 1928, and the station was inaugurated with its final name: Taormina Giardini.
