In the ancient Middle East, a shepherd needed certain skills to do his job: knowledge of edible grasses, capacity to fend off predators, competency to birth lambs; however, the greatest qualification was compassion for his sheep. Without that, none of those other skills would be fully utilized. In Scripture, meaningful ministry is often pictured as a compassionate shepherd caring for his sheep. Gospel ministry requires skills: ability to actively listen to people and apply the gospel to someone’s situation, etc., but ultimately, meaningful ministry requires a compassionate heart—a care that is felt by the one providing the care. Today, we ask the Spirit to show us Jesus’ compassionate shepherd’s heart. The Spirit-worked result will be that we are filled with that same compassion. - Pastor Spaude
