"After the announcement by ETA of the end of their cease-fire and the blocking of the ongoing peace process, we share the concerns of the international community because this is obviously very bad news."
4. Cutaway of journalists
5. SOUNDBITE: (French) Karmelo Landa, former MEP:
"We have propositions on the table. In our opinion, we have publicised a reasonable framework for autonomy. We must re-establish conditions for dialogue and the peace process. There still is an opportunity to construct an enduring peace which is fair for the Basque country."
6. Cutaway of sign reading: (English) "Respect the decision of the Basque people."
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Gorka Elejabarrieta, Representative for European Affairs for the Batasuna Party:
"But we truly regret that when political and civil rights have been violated in the Basque country, a constant during the last 14 months, that when persons have been arrested, imprisoned and tortured, the (European) Union has remained silent. Last elections have been a clear violation of fundamental rights."
8. Cutaway of media
9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Gorka Elejabarrieta, Representative for European Affairs for the Batasuna Party:
"That it is now important to redouble efforts to put the process there back on track, he said this yesterday, Gerry Adams. It is clear that the only way to solve the ongoing conflict in the Basque country will be through a political and democratic process that will solve the two main knots of the conflict: territoriality and the right to decide."
10. Wide of news conference
STORYLINE:
Basque separatists urged the European Union on Wednesday to step in and assist in re-establishing the peace process with the Spanish government, a day after the Basque pro-independence group ETA announced an end of its 15-month truce.
Speaking at a news conference in Brussels, representatives of the Batasuna Party - ETA's outlawed political wing - spoke of their concerns.
"After the announcement by ETA of the end of their cease-fire and the blocking of the ongoing peace process, we share the concerns of the international community because this is obviously very bad news," former member of European Parliament (MEP) and Batasuna member Karmelo Landa said.
ETA said the cease-fire it called last year - and insisted was still in force even after it killed two people with a car bombing last December at the Madrid airport - would formally be over on Wednesday, setting the stage for a quick resumption of attacks.
It blamed Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, accusing him of ruining the peace process by continuing to arrest and try ETA members and by barring most pro-independence candidates from Basque local elections on May 27.
Batasuna representative, Gorka Elejabarrieta, expressed regret that "political and civil rights have been violated in the Basque country, a constant during the last 14 months."
"That when persons have been arrested, imprisoned and tortured, the (European) Union has remained silent. Last elections have been a clear violation of fundamental rights," he said.
Spain's Supreme Court outlawed Batasuna in 2003 on the grounds that it is part of ETA.
As a consequence, Batasuna offices were shut down and it was barred from fielding candidates in elections or engaging in political activity.
