When it comes to jobtech at scale, ride-hailing or “digital driving” has paved the way. Kenya has been a major hub for this work, with more than 13,000 drivers in Nairobi alone. What do drivers’ experiences there teach us about the prospects of jobtech to create more and more dignified work?
In this webinar, Dr. Julie Zollmann will share findings from a 3-year quantitative and qualitative study of digital drivers in Kenya. Her work demonstrates the paradox that emerges when the techniques of digitization enhance experiences of dignity while structural aspects of business models, ownership structures, and market dynamics undermine those gains and jeopardize workers’ long-term financial security, feelings of respect, and voice. How can platforms and regulators in the global South shape a better future for digitally-mediated work? We'll also hear reflections from Uber and (CIFF) on the research and topic.
