The Byford Dolphin incident rocked the offshore drilling sector on November 5, 1983. In the pressurized chambers on the surface of the rig, a sudden shift in pressure from 9 atmospheres to 1 atmosphere resulted in the terrible deaths of five workers. This devastating decompression disaster brought to light serious safety flaws and spurred improvements in diving equipment and procedures.
