The Ukrainian Armed Forces destroyed the Russian 64N6 radar, also known as "Tombstone". They did this, most likely, with the help of ATACMS missiles .
This was reported by the publication Army Recognition. It is noted that this radar is a surveillance tool and "the cornerstone of the Russian air defense network." The 64N6 is designed to detect, track and control air threats over vast distances.
"Its destruction represents a significant blow to the Russian military, as it directly undermines the effectiveness of one of the world's most formidable surface-to-air missile systems," the publication writes.
The 64N6 radar is a key component of the Russian S-300 air defense system. The "Tombstone" acts as the primary sensor for detecting targets and transmits real-time data to the command post, which coordinates the engagement of threats with the system's missiles.
"Without the 64N6, the S-300 system is effectively blind, unable to detect or engage incoming threats with the same level of accuracy. This makes the radar a very important target in any conflict where undermining enemy air defenses is a priority," the article says.
For Ukraine, the destruction of the 64N6 radar is a major tactical victory, the authors emphasize. By neutralizing this important component, Ukrainian troops have significantly worsened the capabilities of Russian regional air defense.
This creates opportunities for Ukrainian drones, missiles and aircraft to operate with less risk, allowing them to strike more effectively against other strategic targets.
"The use of ATACMS missiles for this operation highlights the strategic importance of such targets. With their increased range and accuracy, ATACMS missiles are ideal for striking important targets like 64N6, far behind the front lines," the publication states.
The 64N6 is a long-range 3D phased array radar that operates in the S-band, making it highly effective in detecting aerodynamic and ballistic targets.
The maximum target detection range is about 300 kilometers, so the radar can track and identify threats far beyond the immediate engagement zone of the S-300 family of anti-aircraft missile systems.
It can simultaneously track up to 100 targets, including fighter jets, low-altitude cruise missiles and high-speed ballistic projectiles, Army Recognition writes.
The key feature of the 64N6 radar is its phased array antenna, which provides fast and accurate scanning of airspace. This technology allows the radar to continuously track targets accurately while resisting electronic countermeasures such as jamming. Mounted on a semi-trailer, the radar is mobile and can be quickly deployed.
