Over 40 species of Pilosocereus of Eastern Brazil and Mexico

Описание к видео Over 40 species of Pilosocereus of Eastern Brazil and Mexico

Cactus Island Nursery is participating in a citizen-scientist project for the preservation of Brazilian Pilosocereus and a few Mexican Pilosocereus (not for sale). I’ve grown over 40 species and subspecies from field-collected seed for this project with the long term goal of returning plants and eventually first fruits/seeds to project leads while I maintain a permanent living collection of carefully managed plants as a source for seed (figs. 23-28). Such projects are intended to bring new species into the trade while alleviating poaching pressure and also provide auxiliary reserve collections as a back-up against unforeseen disasters and extinction. I’ve made a lifetime commitment to be a reserve outpost for what I hope will become “micro forests” of each species of threatened or endangered columnar cacti that is in my care. If successful, it would someday be a reliable fount of responsibly propagated seed made available to conservators and the plant industry.
