BETA BLOCKERS
Beta blockers are also called
β-Adrenergic Blocking Agents
Beta blockers are a class of medications that are predominantly used to manage abnormal heart rhythms, and to protect the heart from a second heart attack after a first heart attack

BETA BLOCKERS DRUG CLASSIFICATION

BETA BLOCKERS DRUGS PHARMACOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION
β-Adrenergic Blocking Agents
Nonselective (β1 and β2)
A. Without intrinsic sympathomimetic activity
Propranolol, Sotalol, Timolol
B. With intrinsic sympathomimetic activity
Pindolol
C. With additional α blocking property
Labetalol, Carvedilol

GENERATION WISE CLASSIFICATION OF BETA BLOCKERS DRUG CLASSIFICATION
1. First Generation (older, nonselective)
Propranolol, Timolol, Sotalol, Pindolol
2. Second Generation (β2 selective)
Metoprolol, Atenolol, Acebutolol, Bisoprolol, Esmolol
3. Third Generation (with additional ααα blocking and/
or vasodilator property)
Labetalol, Carvedilol, Celiprolol, Nabivolol

BETA BLOCKERS MECHANISM OF ACTION
Beta blockers work by blocking the effects of the hormone epinephrine, also known as adrenaline.
Beta blockers cause our heart to beat more slowly and with less force, which lowers blood pressure.
Beta blockers also help open up our veins & arteries to improve blood flow in our body.

Inhibition of cardiac β1 receptors leading to decreased cardiac output.
Decrease in renin due to inhibition of β1 receptors in JG cells of the kidney.
Inhibition of central and peripheral sympathetic outflow due to the inhibition
of presynaptic stimulatory β1 receptors on adrenergic neurons.
Increased vasodilatory prostacyclin synthesis in the vascular beds.

BETA BLOCKERS USE & INDICATIONS
Tachycardia,
Hypertension,
Myocardial infarction,
Congestive heart failure,
Cardiac arrhythmias,
Coronary artery disease,
Hyperthyroidism,
Essential tremor,
Aortic dissection,
Portal hypertension,
Glaucoma,
Migraine prophylaxis

BETA BLOCKERS CONTRAINDICATIONS
Beta blockers are contraindicated in patients with
Symptomatic bradycardia Means heart rate less than 60/min that elicits signs and symptoms, but the heart rate is typically less than 50/min.
AV block,
Decompensated heart failure
Asthma.
