Rolex Daytona: White vs Black?

The question comes up often of which one is more popular, the black or the white dial Daytona?

Fans have nicknamed the white dial “Panda” although not truly a panda since the subdials are not Black, only the surrounding circle is black. So I like to refer to it as a "Panda Lite"
The Black dial is often called the “Darth Vader”. For continuity sake, some collectors then refer to the White Dial as the “Storm Trooper”.

Both are extremely popular and sell equally well, although you do sometimes have some people wanting a specific color just because of personal preferences or because of what they already own in their collection.
In the secondary market however, the White Dial seems to fetch a slightly higher price than the Black Dial which ultimately is a sign that the white dial is more sought after.

Why is white more sought after than the black? My belief is that it has everything to do with the contrasting colors of the bezel and the dial.
Before it had a ceramic bezel, the black dial was more popular and desired over the white dial. This is because it was an all Stainless Steel watch and the black dial really popped against the all white metal. Fast forward to today, and we find that the crisp and sharp white lacquer dial pops more against the black bezel than the black dial does.

In my opinion, they are both absolutely gorgeous watches and I’d be happy to own either of these two.

Please comment below, what is your favorite color and why?
