Real Book Drumming is an educational YouTube series of mine in which I transcribe and play mostly choruses of songs from the Real Book, the bible for all jazz players. In this video I present a drum transcription of the first 56 bars of the jazz song "Money Jungle" composed by Duke Ellington from the album "Money Jungle"by Duke Ellington with Charles Mingus and Max Roach, recorded on September 17, 1962 in the Sound Makers Studios in New York City.

"Money Jungle", a 12-bar blues, is characterized by its unique treatment of dissonance, rhythmic complexity and a departure from traditional blues forms. The entire album represents a departure from Ellington's familiar big band sound and features a more intimate and improvisational approach. The recording session itself was impromptu, with no rehearsal. The musicians were provided with lead sheets and a visual description of the piece. The tension during the session, especially between Mingus and Roach, gave the music an added intensity. The release of the album in 1963 came at a turbulent time. "Money Jungle" became a sonic reflection of social unrest, with Mingus, Roach and Ellington interpreting the struggles of African Americans in the 20th century in different ways. The trio's music expressed dissatisfaction with social issues and displayed an avant-garde approach to jazz that blended logical improvisations with chaotic elements. Money Jungle" had an impact beyond its original release and influenced subsequent generations of musicians.

In diesem Video präsentiere ich eine Schlagzeug-Transkription der ersten 56 Takte des von Duke Ellington komponierten Jazz-Songs "Money Jungle" aus dem Album "Money Jungle" von Duke Ellington mit Charles Mingus und Max Roach, aufgenommen am 17. September 1962 in den Sound Makers Studios in New York City.

"Money Jungle", ein 12-taktiger Blues, zeichnet sich durch seine einzigartige Behandlung von Dissonanzen, rhythmische Komplexität und eine Abkehr von traditionellen Bluesformen aus.
