Carnegie Mellon University, known for its interdisciplinary strengths in art and technology, will take a series of artworks to the Moon in 2015. Many of the pieces will be on board Carnegie Mellon's Tranquility Trek rover in pursuit of the $20 million Google Lunar X Prize. Carnegie Mellon's legendary roboticist William "Red" Whitaker is leading a team with Astrobotic Inc. to develop the lunar rover that will compete for the prize. The Moon Arts Group, coordinated by the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry, is honored to join the mission by proposing a series of artworks for the Moon. Projects will be executed before, during and after launch, fully exploring the unique environment of the Moon and outer space. The proposed artworks fall into three categories: LUNAR PERFORMANCE (Art done on the Moon), LUNAR CARGO (Art sent to the Moon), and LUNAR INTERACTIONS (Art made between the Earth and the Moon).
