Описание к видео Why Titanic Movie Cost More Than the Real Ship? | Magnify TV

Did you know that the actual Titanic cost $7.5 million, but the movie based on it, Titanic, cost $200 million—26 times more? Eighty-five years after this heart-wrenching incident, Canadian filmmaker James Cameron, widely known for the famous Avatar franchise, released the movie Titanic. Before writing the script, he went on numerous diving trips to see the wreck of the Titanic. Feeling emotional and saddened by the sight, he decided to capture some footage, which he later used in the movie to help the audience experience the same emotions.

The majority of the movie was shot in Mexico's Baja California, where a huge set and a detailed replica of the Titanic ship were built. The replica was 90% of the size of the actual Titanic and cost $30 million, which is four times the cost of the real ship. Additionally, a massive water tank was constructed, costing $40 million, to accommodate the large replica. The movie set was so vast that a zoning system was used to ensure the crew didn’t get lost.

We all know James Cameron for his meticulous attention to detail. He wanted everything in Titanic to be historically accurate, down to the smallest elements. He even stamped props like forks and ashtrays with the White Star Line logo—the company that actually owned the Titanic. Almost everything was recreated with exact precision, including the carpets, wallpaper, furniture, and lifeboats, to match the original details. He also provided 150 actors with detailed background stories for their characters, allowing them to connect with the roles they were playing, ensuring that everything looked authentic on camera.

During the post-production of the movie, the most advanced CGI technology of that time was used, including realistic water simulation, which was extremely complex and expensive to render back then.

The filming of the movie also took an extended amount of time. With delays, the production lasted around seven months, leading to an increase in the production budget. For the lead roles, rising star Leonardo DiCaprio was signed for $2.5 million, while Kate Winslet was cast for $2 million. A huge amount was also spent on marketing the film, including trailers, posters, international promotions, TV spots, and more.

Titanic was the highest-grossing film of its time, earning $2.2 billion worldwide. It also became the first film in history to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office. The movie was so successful that it won 11 Oscars. Titanic held the title of the highest-grossing film for over a decade, until James Cameron's own film, Avatar, broke its record.
