In January 2012, Johnson County Transit (JCT) will start running The JO Xpress, an enhanced bus service along I-35 linking Johnson County with downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Bus service currently runs along I-35, but this enhanced service will feature Bus on Shoulder (BOS) operations during the morning and evening rush hours from 95th Street to Lamar Avenue.

BOS operations mean that buses can travel on the shoulder when traffic on I-35 has slowed to less than 35 miles per hour, thus bypassing congested areas. Buses can't travel more than 10 miles faster than the traffic on the highway and won't exceed a 35 mph. So, if traffic is moving at 20 miles an hour, buses traveling on the shoulder will be traveling at 30 mph. By reducing the impact of traffic congestion on travel time, The JO Xpress will be able to provide more efficient and reliable transit service.

Other enhancements include additional bus stop locations with new shelters, real-time arrival signage and other amenities, to be completed in Spring 2012.

JCT has partnered with the Kansas Department of Transportation, the Kansas Highway Patrol, local jurisdictions, and traffic and transportation experts to ensure that BOS operations are both safe and effective.
