On March 11 we held our South Heat at the Stove Network in Dumfries! We were honoured to have UK spoken word legend Joelle Taylor serve as our Sacrificial Poet.

Joelle Taylor is the author of 4 collections of poetry and one novel. Her most recent collection C+NTO & Othered Poems won the 2021 T.S Eliot Prize, and the Polari Book Prize for LGBT authors, and was named a book of the year by The White Review, The New Statesman, The Guardian and the Telegraph. C+NTO is currently being adapted for theatre with a view to touring nationally and internationally. Her work is translated into 7 languages and she regularly tours her work to countries including Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and across Europe. She is a co-curator and host of Out-Spoken Live, resident at the Southbank Centre, and an editor at Out-Spoken Press. Her novel of interconnecting stories The Night Alphabet will be published by Quercus in Spring of 2024, followed by her memoirs. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and the 2022 Saboteur Spoken Word Artist of the Year.

For her Sacrificial Poet set, Joelle performed the title poem of her book 'C+nto.' It is a fierce yet vulnerable punch of a poem, celebrating and mourning butch lives and culture. Joelle's performance in Dumfries was deeply powerful and emotional; it brought the crowd to their feet.
