“The failure to bring the European framework in line with prevailing international standards can be seen today in Trapani, with the wholly inappropriate application of the crime under Italian law to the work of the luventa crew and other civil sea rescuers”.

Laws that punish the facilitation of movement of people do not serve to protect people on the move but to deter them. They serve only the interests of Fortress Europe, the perpetuation of structural injustice to enforce the capitalist logic of exploitation.

These laws should never have existed and now they must be abolished. Facilitating freedom of movement is a necessity, not a crime!
