HOPE UR OK in 2021: Year-End Pop Megamix (Mashup of 160+ Songs) by KoS Mashups

It’s finally here; my second ever year-end mashup is completed, and it could not have come any sooner.

I have been doing mashups for almost two years now, and this project is the fifth full-length megamix I’ve ever attempted, on or off-channel. And this is by far the hardest project I have ever done.

First of all, I need to give credit to Andy Wu MUSICLAND, Normal Smasher, and Multistan Pleasure, channels that all inspired me with their own work and made me want to try my best on this, as well as Adamusic, whose community was instrumental in me completing this project. I also want to recognize support I received from the Let’s Mash It Up server on Discord, which connected me with even more amazing creators. Shout out to PRDSM for the tech tips when my editing software was driving me insane, and a special thanks to Aren Mix, whose support and encouragement I absolutely could not have completed this project without. Thank you :)

Making this was a roller coaster of either feeling incredibly inspired or genuinely almost giving up. I did not know if I would ever release it, and I definitely didn’t want to release it this late. Although my planning process started at the beginning of the year, the actual composition was started on the first day of September—nearly four months ago, and I still barely got this out on time. This had an insane amount of difficulties, both creatively and technically, but it was important to me that it sounded as best as I could possibly make it, and I really made the effort not to cut any corners. And as a result, it was incredibly time-consuming, frustrating and stressful.

This year was a very mixed bag for me personally, and I definitely tested my limits trying to balance this channel with school, work and personal things. At times it was very difficult to keep going in anything. But I like to see this project as a reminder to keep trying. When things wouldn’t work out as I assembled this mashup, the hardest thing to do was to just keep trying and workshopping new solutions. I took forever, but eventually I was able to break through burnout, frustration and self-criticism. And I think I want that perseverance to be the main takeaway from the narrative of this video. It isn’t perfect, but to me it shows how worth it it is to keep trying.

And I like that Hope Ur Ok was the thematic song for this mix because it is a reminder that I needed a lot over this year, for a lot of reasons, especially outside of the channel. This year had the biggest and most unique set of challenges I have ever faced, and very often I wanted to just give up. But when I gave myself a break and stepped back to re-evaluate, I would find the motivation to get back into it and finish strong.

This year wasn’t all good days, and a lot of it was honestly pretty brutal. But even though the sun goes down and the world caves in, life goes on.
