For the PyO3 0.21 release, we will be introducing a new "Bound" API which brings lifetime of Python data under control of user code. This helps with performance, memory consumption and correctness compared to the "GIL Refs" API which we're replacing. You can read more about this work at https://github.com/PyO3/pyo3/issues/3382

This week, we'll be trying to build some advanced deprecation hints into PyO3's `#[pyfunction]` and `#[pymethods]` procedural macros, to flag to users when they are accepting "GIL Refs" as function arguments and advise them to update. Warnings and deprecations aren't a built-in feature of procedural macros, so we're probably going to have to resort to trait tricks and probably "autoderef specialization" to attempt to achieve the effect we want.
