Memories of Iceland: Stokksness, flight to Vestrahorn

12 kilometres east of the town of Höfn in south-east Iceland lies one of the most beautiful natural panoramas on the island, perhaps even in the world. The Klifatindur mountain massif stretches far into the coast and culminates in the 454 metre high Vestrahorn. The exposed cliffs owe their steep and unapproachable shape to the magmatic deep rock from which they are built. The granophyre and gabbro rocks, which are rare in Iceland, are extremely hard and resistant to weathering and form rugged ridges and rock faces. The black lava sand and, depending on the season, the green or yellow dune grass on the small dunes form a great contrast to the mountains. When the steady wind dies down, the reflection of the mountains in the shallow water of the lagoon creates a wonderful landscape.


12 km östlich des Ortes Höfn im Südosten Islands liegt eines der wohl schönsten Naturpanoramen der Insel, vielleicht sogar weltweit. Das Bergmassiv Klifatindur erstreckt sich hier weit in die Küste hinein und gipfelt im 454m hohen Vestrahorn. Die exponierten Klippen verdanken ihre steile und unnahbare Gestalt dem magmatischem Tiefengestein aus dem sie aufgebaut sind. Die für Island seltenen Gesteine Granophyr und Gabbro sind extrem hart und verwitterungsbeständig und bilden schroffe Grate und Felswände. Der schwarze Lavasand und das je nach Jahreszeit grüne oder gelbe Dünengras auf den kleinen Dünen bildet einen tollen Kontrast zu den Bergen. Wenn dann noch einmal der stete Wind nachlässt, bildet das Spiegelbild der Berge im flachem Wasser der Lagune ein wunderschönes Landschaftsbild.
