Lesser Whistling Ducks

A variety of duck species can be seen in waterbodies of our country during winter, some of them are migratory and some reside here permanently.
The small-sized Lesser Whistling Ducks are the most common among them.
They are locally known as ‘Choto Sarali’.
They have brown bodies with long necks and brown tails.
They look alike our domestic ducks.
The Lesser Whistling Duck is the resident bird of our country.
Sometimes people mistake them for migratory birds.
They spread out in pairs in various water bodies, ponds, lakes, and haors during other seasons.
But they are often seen together in winter because of their flocking.

Lesser Whistling Ducks are diurnal in nature.
But sometimes they fly and chirp in flocks at night.
They rest during the day in the aquatic bushes.
They feed on aquatic weeds, plants-shrubs, insects, snails, etc.

April to October is their breeding season.
At this time, they build nests in the socket of large trees on the banks of waterbodies and lay 7 to 11 eggs.
The eggs hatch in about 20-21 days.

Another species of Lesser Whistling Ducks is the Fulvous Whistling Ducks.
They look alike Lesser Whistling Ducks but are larger in size.

However, our water bodies are changing.
The constant movement of people disrupts their safe habitats.
Also, hunting is a key reason for the decline of these birds.
Many people domesticate ducks, which is not right.
Wildlife domestication is punishable by law.
Because a thing is valued where it belongs.

Their number is declining like other birds in our nature.
Yet, their presence makes the waterbodies sonorous.
And it is our responsibility to safeguard these beautiful birds.
With consciousness, we can protect the water bodies and enjoy watching the Lesser Whistling Ducks roam freely.
