Google Earth Studio tour of Naval Air Facility Atsugi in Ayase, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Google Earth imagery as of April 18, 2020.

At 1,249 acres, it is the largest U.S. Navy air base in the Pacific. NAF Atsugi is a shared-use installation with units of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. Built in 1938, Atsugi was a formidable fighter base for the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II and was largely destroyed by war's end. On August 30, 1945, Gen. Douglas MacArthur landed at Atsugi to accept Japan's surrender. In 1950, the Seabees began preparing it for re-opening as Naval Air Station Atsugi. It was re-designated a Naval Air Facility in 1971.
