Dion Devow, a proud First Nations Man of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent, embodies a legacy steeped in cultural heritage and community dedication. With roots tracing back to the Manbarra and Palm Island Group, as well as Darnley Island in the Torres Strait, Dion's identity is interwoven with a rich tapestry of indigenous lineage.

Armed with over three decades of experience, Dion holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Health Education/Community Development from the University of Canberra, solidifying his commitment to empowering First Nations communities. His illustrious career is punctuated by accolades, including recognition as the 2014 ACT NAIDOC Businessperson of The Year, the 2016 ACT NAIDOC Person of The Year, and the 2018 ACT Australian of the Year.

In this film, Dion reflects on why Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) Elimination is so important to Australia's national identity.

Take Heart is a film-led advocacy campaign that has been committed to eliminating RHD (Rheumatic Heart Disease) in Australia for over a decade.

During this time, we have seen huge improvements in general awareness of RHD, alongside the establishment of dozens of community-led programs offering hope for the future.

However, at least 2 young people die from this preventable disease in Australia every week. Most of these young people identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders. Tragically, Rheumatic Heart Disease has the greatest negative impact on the life-expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
