When you attempt to access a shared network folder, drive or computer, and you receive the message “The network path was not found. Error code 0x80070035”, it signals a communication failure in your local-area network or file-sharing configuration. This issue is especially common on Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems when accessing SMB shares, mapped drives, NAS devices or sibling PCs.

Key symptoms

Attempting to navigate to a network share like \\ComputerName\Share results in the error.

The target computer may appear in Windows File Explorer under “Network”, but the share cannot be opened.

Error details may read: “Windows cannot access \[computer][share]. Error code: 0x80070035. The network path was not found.”

The issue typically arises despite both systems being on the same IP subnet, with file sharing enabled.


Common causes

1. Incorrect sharing settings – The target folder may not have been shared, or the share permissions (and/or NTFS permissions) may deny access.


2. Network discovery or SMB protocol disabled – If Network Discovery or File & Printer Sharing is turned off, or if the SMB version required (e.g., SMB 1.0) isn’t enabled, access can fail.


3. NetBIOS / name resolution issues – If NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled, or DNS/NBNS can’t resolve the target computer name, the path may not be found.


4. Firewall or security software blocking access – A local or third-party firewall may block ports (such as TCP 445) needed for SMB communication.


5. Outdated or corrupted network drivers/hardware issues – The network adapter driver may be faulty, or the physical network may suffer connectivity issues.


6. Windows security settings / guest authentication restrictions – Recent Windows updates may tighten sharing restrictions (guest access, insecure logons), which can trigger the error.
