In 1995, Microsoft launched Internet Explorer as part of an add-on package for its operating system, Microsoft Windows 95. Internet Explorer was widely used at the time due to the success of the Windows operating system. It had over 90% of the market share by the early 2000s, demonstrating Microsoft's dominance of the personal computing sector.

By that time, Netscape had largely left the market, so Internet Explorer didn't face much opposition until Mozilla entered the picture. Mozilla was started in 1998 as a project to promote innovation in the web browser industry and was founded by former Netscape employees. Mozilla released Firefox in 2004, and by 2006, the open-source, free browser had nearly 30% of the market.

For a few more years, Firefox and Internet Explorer fought it out, but by the middle of the 2010s, Google Chrome had begun to surpass both of them.
