France Parliamentary Elections: Far-Right Eyes Power, Macron's Centrist Camp Trails In Opinion Polls

Voting is underway in France for the two-phase parliamentary elections, with the second round of voting scheduled for July 7. The voting is underway for 577 seats in the National Assembly. Marine Le Pen’s far-right party is eyeing power in a historic first since World War II. Opinion polls show the far-right National Rally (RN) party in the lead with 35-37 per cent votes while the leftist New Popular Front could get 27.5-29 per cent votes. According to opinion polls, French President Emmanuel Macron's Centrist alliance reportedly trailed with 20-21 per cent votes. RN’s victory could give France its youngest PM with 28-year-old Jordan Bardella, Le Pen’s protege and RN party chief. Macron has warned against the far-right’s victory, stating that it could spark a "civil war". Macron announced Snap elections after his centrist camp lost European Parliament polls earlier this month.
