Century ago, the Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, made his maiden visit to Shillong, the capital of undivided Assam. Rabindranath Tagore visited Shillong three times, in 1919, 1923, and 1927, and had a profound connection to the city. During his visits, he stayed at the Brookside bungalow, which is now a museum and art gallery by ICCR, dedicated to him. His time in Shillong inspired some of his literary works including the famous play ‘Raktakarabi’ & the romantic novel - ‘Shesher Kobita’ - The city served as the backdrop and inspiration for this novel.
