According to Sthalapuranam and local stories, the history of Sri Saramma Matla Ammavari temple, which fulfills the wishes of devotees and always shows the truth...
Saramma's mother was born in the family of Burra in the Gauda Kulam of Kaundinya Gotra in Lingapalem village of West Godavari district. Married to Parsa Nagayya Swami of Terlika village in Krishtaj district. As Sri Sarammathalli was the only child of her parents, both Saramma's mother and Nagayya Swamy lived in the same village as Lingapalem. Nagayya Swamy caste was a stone cutter by profession. Sarammathalli used to go to Gollagudem and sell that stone for a living. Thus, Saramma became friends with the girl named Ankamma in Gollagudem. As they have no children, Nagayya Swami and Saramma's mother treat Ankamma as their own daughter. While living like that... one day Nagayya Swamy fell from a tree and died while drawing stones. Seeing this incident, Sarammathalli could not bear it. Devastated by the death of her husband. Sarammathalli, who was a righteous woman, decided that she could not survive without Nagayya Swami, and along with Nagayya Swami, Saramma's mother also decided to enter the fire pit.
Uri Karnam and Munusubu are passing through the town. Seeing them, Sarammathalli asked me to prepare a fire pit. They proceeded from there laughing and mocking that we should set up a fire pit for you who sell stones. As soon as they went a little distance, they lost sight of their eyes. Then the grandmother came to know the truth. Munusubu and Karanam came back and apologized to Sarammathalli and set up a bonfire.
While Sarammathalli was going to take Nagayya Swami and get burnt in the fire, Ankamma also went into the fire pit saying that I can't live without you, I will come with you. While everyone was watching, the three got caught in the fire. While the fire pit was burning, Nagayya's father, Saramma's mother and Ankamma's mother appeared to those watching the fire as three deity forms. After a few days, they would appear in the dreams of the village elders and talk to them. According to their wish, the idols were taken in the form of gods, and every year on Palguna Suddha Purnami days, they brought them from the birthplace of Saramma's mother to the fire pit in a village procession and after treading the gundam, Tirunal festival was held for 5 days. Since then she has been blessing the devotees who believed in the goddess with happiness. If the devotees go to the front of the temple and call 'Amma', it will be heard. Devotees used to express their sorrows to that mother. Saramma's mother used to send them assuring that I will take care of them. While this was going on, one day Yadavaraja lost his sheep, tired of searching for them for a week, he came to Amma's temple and called her Saramma's mother. Then Yadavaraj shouted that my sheep are gone, my mother has not been looking for me for a week, I can't find any direction, I have come to you, mother. Don't you worry about your sheep with Sarammathalli Yadavaraja. Ankamma will take care of your sheep from the week. I will tell you where your sheep are and what will you do to Ankamma, she asked. Then that Yadavaraja said that he will give me a sheep and a kid from my sheep as a lamb. Then the grandmother told the place where the sheep were. Yadavaraja went to that place and skinned the sheep.
After that for a few days, Yadavaraja went towards the temple removing the sheep. Sarammathalli called Yadavaraja. The Yadavaraja cursed Sarammathalli saying that her mouth has not yet licked. The next moment, Yadavaraja turned into a rock in front of the temple. Saramma's mother's mouth dropped. Since then, all the Yadava kings together put up a tent to Ankamma as part of the Tirunal mahotsavam and on the Aakari day of Tirunal, each image of the goddess is painted in front of the tent and a baddi sheep is sacrificed. Since then, these Tirunals have continued every year without interruption for generations.
Thousands of devotees take part in these Thirunals, which are held in full splendor with colorful electric lights. Sri Nagayya's father, Sri Saramma's mother, giving darshan to the faithful devotees in the form of idols and fulfilling their wishes...
