Mixing things up for you, dear viewers, with a gold prospecting adventure that I think ties in nicely with the gold mining that I have shown elsewhere on this channel… My interest in mining has long been centered on the history, the engineering talent, the equipment, the miners, etc. rather than on what was being mined and the TVR Exploring videos have reflected that. However, I have to admit that seeing all of the lovely gold that was being pulled out on this expedition, certainly made me more interested in picking up a pan myself and learning more about gold prospecting. But, don’t worry, I’ll keep exploring the abandoned underground mines for as long as I am able to.
I tried to include everyone that was looking for gold along the creek in this video, but sometimes I wasn’t there at the right time or I was on the wrong side of the creek or whatever. It is hard to always be where the action is.
Officially, Prospector Jake was the big winner on this trip. He did, in fact, locate a great quantity of gold. No question about that… However, I suspect that a few of the other participants may have been playing it a little coy with how much gold they were finding.
I’d love for someone to pull a giant gold nugget out of this mining claim. RAD Adventures owns the mining claim, but anyone that comes on a trip, naturally, keeps any gold that they find.

I spent most of my time hanging out with the prospectors and filming what they were doing. However, I did get some time to go exploring around the canyon. It feels (and is, really) so remote there that you might as well be on another planet. Or several hundred years in the past… I was going to write “one hundred years in the past” before I realized that this area had a lot more gold miners and mining a century ago than it does now. So, it wouldn’t have felt so remote in 1920 as it does in 2020. There are few places that one can say that about!
Personally, I like the feeling of unplugging from everything (no phone service out there!) and being more connected with nature and the people you’re with. So, really, as with all of our mine exploring trips, it is more about the journey and just being out there rather than an experience revolving solely around the gold or the mines.

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.
So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!
