The ruler of the gods Wotan has summoned his lover, the goddess of the earth Erda, to call upon her wisdom. Is there any way to stop the inevitable? How can you stop a wheel already in motion, he asks her.

But Erda answers cryptically. "Darkness has spread over my spirit through men's deeds," she sings. "My wisdom itself once felt a conqueror's force." Then she turns the question back to him: Erda once bore Wotan a child, a valkyrie who was wise and bold. Why wake up the mother when the child should be at Wotan's side?

She's about to learn the fate of her daughter Brünnhilde, the rebellious valkyrie stripped of her immortality — and doomed to live as a mortal's wife. "Strange seems the world," Erda sighs, still dazed from her long sleep.
