🚨 My workshop on oils & butters will empower you to make evaluate and choose oils and butters for YOUR hair and your regimen. I teach you not only the science 🧪 of oils and the structure of hair, but also an easy process for predicting how an oil will likely affect your hair. The aim is to move you closer to your ideal regimen with less guesswork and product “junkyism”. Click the link and nab an early bird ticket before they run out🚨
In a video all about clumps, I talked about the merits of clumping but clearly I did a rubbish job at explaining what I meant. With the aim of making amends, this video will show you what a clumping workflow actually looks like. Try it and create your own clumps!

This is the video I made last year -    • How to start 2020 with longer hair | ...
This is the one where you can see the nighttime routine (you NEED to do this well to have clumps that last) -    • CLUMP MAINTENANCE | THE LAZIEST MOST ...

Step 1: twist your clean hair
My favourite twisting technique these days is the loose-rope twist, which gives me the volume of a loose twist combined with some of the longevity of a rope twist.

This is how to do a loose-rope twist
For the purpose of creating clumps and to avoid matting at the roots, I start all my twists with a short plait.

Twirl your hair as you twist but not as much as you would a rope twist.

Step 2: wear the twists
Just wear them however you wish. The way you approach keeping them moisturised and stretched will affect how readily they’ll be removed to pay attention.

Optional: cleanse them
You can do a single wash day with clay - note that you do this at your own risk.
This works well for me.

Step 3: lube up your fingers and remove them
Use an oil of choice. Grape seed & jojoba are personal favourites and adding a few drops of lavender oil can make the whole experience more sensual.

When doing this, don’t just go straight in for the kill. Start at the very ends and gently tease the two tendrils apart from one another, using scissors if you come across any stubborn knots.

Step 4: these are your clumps
Yay! See - not so complicated, right?
Over time, these will become less twist-out like and more loc-like. Embrace that but if you’re serious about length retention, keep your hair in buns or other up-dos with your ends tucked away.
You can wear such styles over a few days, spritzing and moisturising the exposed regions and ends as you see fit.
If you’re spritzing loose hair, especially your ends, remember to stretch it to preclude it from coiling on itself irreparably.

Step 5: pre-poo
After a week or so in your clumps, use your low molecular weight oil, e.g. babassu, avocado, olive or coconut and a slippery conditioner, FYI the best ones in my opinion, contain behentrimonium & dimethicone, to detangle the clumps, ensuring you retain your sections. I do this by loosely twisting each section upon detangling it.

Step 6: wash, rinse and repeat.

Now you know what clumps are - go out and conquer the world!
